Deseret News sports writer Brad Rock defended Rick Reilly against claims of religious bigotry, in the wake of Reilly's "Jimmer grows dimmer" piece, about which I have already posted (see: Rick Reilly).
I suppose Brad Rock is simply defending a colleague -- i.e., a fellow sports writer. Rock ignores Rick Reilly's history, though. Whenever he gets the chance, Reilly writes hostile things about religious people (not just Mormons).
Here are four examples of Reilly's attitude on religion, to get you started:
1. Reilly condemns religious wrestler. Reilly: "Does any wrong-headed decision suddenly become right when defended with religious conviction?"
2. In his book "Sports from Hell," Reilly recounts a nude bike trip he went on. In one paragraph he describes riding naked past a family on their way out of church, including a 9-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy, and notes that "I make no judgment whether what we did was right or wrong." (page 175)
3. In his book "Missing Links" (page 59), Reilly brags about the Christmas when he went around town stealing figures of the baby Jesus from nativity displays. He estimates that he took 35 or so.
4. His novel "Slo-Mo" is the story of a tall boy raised in a cave by a religious cult in Colorado. The set-up probably says it all, but in case you were wondering, the book is full of insulting references (many of them sexual) relating to Christians and Muslims.
So now the burden of proof shifts to Brad Rock -- give us some evidence to support your theory that Rick Reilly demonstrates religious tolerance.
